Mid Cities Care Corps News

A Sugar Plum Christmas for seniors in North east Tarrant County

The spirit of this Holiday Season will extend into 2008 for many of our senior neighbors in Northeast Tarrant County thanks to the coordinated team efforts of The Wellington, Mid-Cities Care Corps, and the Haltom City Police Department.

The Wellington senior retirement community at 6150 Glenview Dr., North Richland Hills held its second annual Sugar Plum Christmas celebration. Beverly Brewer (Picture 01), Sales Director for The Wellington coordinated the celebration which included the donation by local friends and businesses of 14 decorated Christmas Trees by local businesses (02) providing a festive mood throughout the resident center.

Guests visiting residents November 23rd through December 15th were encouraged to vote for their favorite tree by placing a gift for a senior under their favorite tree. The gifts collected were targeted for distribution to the “young at heart” senior neighbors in the area. Beverly reflects “the initial thought was to collect gifts for children in the area, but then the realization occurred that there is also a need to share the Christmas Spirit with many senior neighbors in our area that are isolated from such holiday experiences.” Visitors were also encouraged to participate in a silent auction for the trees. December 15th the Wellington hosted a celebration at which the 2007 Sugar Plum Crystal Bowl was presented to the tree receiving the most donated gifts (03, 04) by a representative of the North Richland Hills City Council. Winners of the silent auction for the 14 trees were also announced. Beverly shared the exciting results of over 700 gifts collected, exceeding everyone’s spirited expectations based upon the 150 gifts collected during the 2006 celebrations.

Mid-Cities Care Corps (MCCC) agreed to coordinate distribution of the donated gifts to isolated senior neighbors in the area and in return The Wellington generously designated funds received from the silent auction to MCCC. Overwhelmed by the response is an understatement! (05, 06, 07) Preplanning included intentional efforts to bridge generational and community involvement. We continue to be amazed at the spirited response of MCCC and community volunteers to a worthy cause. Over 18 members of the St. Philip Presbyterian youth group endured and completed wrapping over 185 packages on December 16th, providing an added festive touch to the gifts for distribution (08, 09). The result, 207 significant gifts valued at $20 or more were wrapped or combined in gift bags for distribution. What seemed like a daunting distribution project was completed quite remarkably given all the Santa Helpers that responded! The results filled Santa’s sleigh! (10, 11).

The Haltom City Police Department and MCCC volunteer drivers provided logistics for the gift distribution. Sgt Rowell did a fantastic job of coordinating the effort through the on-duty Haltom City police officers who delivered 88 gifts to Haltom City senior residents on Christmas Day. (12, 13) The remaining gifts were distributed by MCCC volunteers to MCCC clients and government subsidized resident centers in the area.

A picture is worth a 1,000 words. The expressions captured on several senior neighbors are priceless and illustrate the SPIRIT extended throughout the community through this event. (14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19)

The Fort Worth Star Telegram covered the event in with an article by David Sedeño Senior Citizens Under A Tree and From the Heart in the Sunday, December 9, 2007 issue. The Star Telegram Northeast Click December 30, 2008 addition included a picture of the St. Philip Presbyterian Youth who wrapped the gifts that were distributed.

Booker T. Washington said, “If you want to lift yourself up, lift up someone else.” Mid-Cities Care Corps wants to acknowledge appreciation to all who supported this Holiday Celebration, for the experiences touched not only those senior neighbors that received the gifts but also those who gave of their time and resources. What a way to complete 2007 and begin to focus on the New Year!

A blessed 2008 to all from Mid-Cities Care Corps
